Expanded Foods Nutrition Education Program Food Tasting at Pender Christian Services

Situation

The Expanded Foods and Nutrition Program (EFNEP) offers food-tasting programs at Pender County Christian Services (PCCS). PCCS is a non-profit charity organization with a food pantry that helps distribute food to low-income, rural residents, assists with disaster response and relief, offers workforce development training, and has a thrift store where people can purchase food, donated clothes and household goods. Local food pantries such as PCCS can be a lifesaver for limited-resource families.

Response

Working with Sandy Harris, Executive Director of PCCS, the EFNEP Program Assistant provided a food tasting of homemade turkey chili at one of these tasting events. It was held at the PCCS building and provided drive-up food distribution on November 8, 2022. Recipes were given out by the EFNEP PA and cans of chili beans were given out by PCCS.

Results

Thirty families participated in this two-hour event, with many expressing gratitude and excitement about the quality and flavor of the turkey chili as many have never had it before. Ninety percent of participants indicated that they would make it at home for their families.

The Expanded Foods and Nutrition Program (EFNEP) Assistant is supported by 22 Pender County teachers and volunteers. The Program Assistant (PA) works with these volunteers who donated 36 hours of volunteer time valued at $1,078. In 2022 there were 234 EFNEP classroom sessions over 66 hours that reached 1,398 Pender County elementary school students and adults. The program assistant also received $200 in donated food, utensils, and toothbrushes to share with students.
