The Southeast Regional Beef Conference is coming up on Tuesday, December 10, 2019. The event will be held at the Sampson County Agri-Exposition Center from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Agri-Exposition Center is located at 414 Warsaw Road, Clinton, NC 28328. The conference will focus on “maternal values” and will feature two speakers, Dr. Vitor Mercadante and Dr. Jordan Thomas.

Dr. Mercadante, assistant professor and extension specialist from Virginia Tech University, will address two topics:

Breeding Systems for Profit: improving production efficiency with reproductive management: the necessity of early conception in your breeding season and the factors that influence it.

Managing Females for the Long Term: most cattle producers cull and replace fifteen to twenty percent of their cows annually. Well developed heifers provide the greatest potential for long-term productivity. Proper development of heifers should ensure early conception, full-term pregnancies, unassisted calving, weaning a healthy calf, and rebreeding as a first-calf heifer.

Dr. Thomas, assistant extension professor with the University of Missouri, will discuss:

Selecting Fertile Heifers: selecting the right heifers with the use of different technologies based on experiences from Missouri’s Show-Me-Select Replacement Heifer Program.

In addition to the education sessions, there will also be a trade show highlighting various segments of the beef cattle industry. Vendors representing pharmaceutical companies, feed, mineral, and supplement suppliers, cattle handling equipment dealers, seed stock producers, and others will be on site ready to answer questions about their products and services.

Producers can register in advance ($15) or at the door ($20). Lunch will be provided for all in attendance.
