A new Hiking/Nature Club held their first meeting in February and will be meeting on the 4th Monday of the month from 4:30–6 p.m. The club meetings rotate between Riverbend and Bakers Mountain county parks with four Saturday hikes planned at State Parks. New members are welcome to join the group for their next meetings on March 25 at Baker Mountain Park and April 22 at Riverbend Park. Members will meet at the covered picnic area for the afternoon hike and nature program. Children need to be accompanied by an adult caregiver. The club is recommended for ages 8 and older or those who can easily handle a hike of at least a mile. This club meets from February – October. At each meeting, members enjoy a short hike, nature or wildlife program. Youth are recording what they are learning so they compile an Outdoors Project Book based on the club program activities.

Banoak Elementary School is offering an after-school garden club that meets weekly on Tuesday afternoons immediately after school. Students are now registering for a spring club offered for older students, while younger students participated in a Fall garden club. Lauren Weaver, a Banoak teacher, is the club leader. The children spend time working in the raised beds at the school while learning about plants and soils. In the Fall, Ms. Weaver integrated technology with the students creating podcasts based on their gardening experience. This club is limited to Banoak students.

4-H is a volunteer-led youth development program for children ages 5-18 and offered through N.C. Cooperative Extension. Through clubs, youth develop leadership and life skills while exploring areas of interests. Once children join 4-H, they are able to participate in a variety of activities offered on the county, regional, and state levels. For more information or to register to participate in these new or other continuing 4-H clubs contact Donna Mull, 4-H Agent, at 828-465-8240 or email donna_mull@ncsu.edu. A complete list of 4-H clubs can be found on the N.C. Cooperative Extension of Catawba County website.
